POPULAR SCHOOL EXPANSION WILL CUT LONG WAITING LIST
THE vastly over-subscribed Alcester Grammar School is expanding to welcome in more pupils.
Alcester Grammar, which includes a a sixth form of 500 plus, is continuously rated by Ofsted as outstanding and has over 400 students chasing 90 places in Year 7 every year.
Now Greswolde Construction has started work on the new Spencer Building, which will enable the popular school to take a total of 150 more Year 7 pupils over five years, starting in September 2013.
Designed by Baily Garner LLP Associate Marcus Lewis RIBA, the building is constructed of brick with a striking smokey blue feature section.
It will house five language classrooms and two chemistry and two food technology labs. A new multi use sports area has already been built behind the sports hall.
Architect Marcus worked very closely with the school and its three faculty teams to ensure everyone got what they wanted.
"It's unusual for schools to get their staff so involved in the design, and Alcester's pro-active consultation made this a very interesting project indeed," he says.
"We have enjoyed helping them to get the very best out of their building, which will be a pleasure in which to teach and learn."
Greswolde is looking forward to helping the school get the most out of the construction phase too.
"We chose Greswolde because of its good track record of delivering similar projects in an educational environment," says Paul, whose school is revising its green travel policy to minimise disruption to local residents, both during construction and when the new intakes arrive.
"The team is keen that we use the experience to educate the students. We are looking at ways to make curricular links to their work."
Greswolde, whose recent education clients include Keele University, Solihull's Saint Martin's School and Stourbridge's King Edward VI College, will relish the experience too.
"We are very used to working on live sites and students are always very interested in what we're doing. Our teams are very happy to turn that into an educational advantage," says Greswolde MD Malcolm Priest.
"This is a prestigious project that will deliver a development that will enhance the school's facilities and environment, and we are happy to be on site."
Baily Garner LLP's artist impression of the Spencer Building, whose green features, including solar panels, will better current building regulations' carbon emission requirements by 10%. "We wanted something that would complement existing buildings, but have its own identity," says Alcester Grammar School's Paul Kelly.
